The Italian Job – day 7

Siena loop to

An ‘optional’ challenging days ride and one of the hardest of the tour but also one of the most scenic. Tuscany is beautiful but unforgiving with the number of ups and downs to contend with. This ride encompasses everything that you think about when you think of Tuscany – a rewarding, yet challenging ride.  (Description based on route notes from Peak Tours).

Route from Siena loop to (61 miles):

Elevation profile (ascent ~4900 feet):

It was surprisingly quick to leave Sienna and be out in the countryside – partly due to a brutal 18% climb away from the main road up through the trees! The weather was sunny and very hot but that just made the scenery spectacular. As it was only Gary and myself doing the full loop we left at eight and kept going until lunch stop in Asciano to make the most of what little cool air there was in the morning. After lunch it was a steady ride back in the head with a stop for more water, lots of juice and a gelato.

A few videos of the route.
