Mallaig to Kinlochewe
An early ferry crossing to Armadale on the Isle of Skye. Then it is up to the Kyle of Lochalsh for more amazing scenery but there are lots of hills on the route including a few big ones. Then on the mainland there is an optional detour down to the beautiful village of Plockton which has been used in the filming of The Wicker Man, The Inspector Allen Mysteries, and Hamish Macbeth. Thankfully the day finishes with a long gradual downhill to Kinlochewe. (Description based on route notes from Peak Tours).
Route from Mallaig to Kinlochewe (78 miles):
Early start for the ferry but still took up the offer of a cooked breakfast – nice to have time to digest it for once as ferry meant we were no straight onto the bikes! After the ferr we set of from Armadale heading north on Skye. There were nice view out towards Loch Hourn but there was quite a head wind once we got up onto the moor heading towards Broadford. Once we turn east the weather brightened up and by the time we reached the Skye Bridge at Kyleakin the sun was out. At Kyle of Lochalsh we headed north passing through Drumbuie and Duirinish. then I took the optional detour into Plockton which was beautiful n the morning sunshine. After doubling back to the route we cycled beside Loch Carron up to Attadale for lunch. Then we wend round the end of the loch and doubled back on the north side to Lochcarron before climbing over to Loch kishorn and then to up to lock Sheildaig & Upper Loch Torridon. the views to the mountains, including the Torridons, were (yet again!) spectacular. Then it was down to the Inn at Kinlochewe and a special treat for me was to have a pint of beer called ‘Beinn Dearg’! Then most of the group had a meal in the Whistle Stop cafe.
